How Brain Chemistry Changes Have "Cured" Emotional Instability and Menopause Insanity

Book Review: Tools For Hormone Balance Help Women Take Control of Their Menopause Moods and Emotions

This book review of “Female Brain Gone Insane” was written by Eliza Fayle and published on her website SilverAndGrace.com blog on January 21, 2010

“I am very big on listening to our own bodies, and that is what this book is all about.

“Too often I hear stories about women in their forties and fifties being prescribed anti-depressants. But nowhere in the telling of the tale is any talk of being perimenopausal and menopausal. No talk about eating habits. No talk of exercise habits. Just ‘I felt bad and my doctor gave me Prozac. Now I feel okay.’ Not, now I feel great. Just okay.

“‘The Female Brain Gone Insane‘ is a practical guide which provides an explanation of how our hormone levels fluctuate throughout the month, and throughout our lifetime.

“I have read several books on the connection between hormonal balance and state of mind. However, ‘Female Brain Gone Insane’ is the first one that suggests that I, not a doctor, have the wherewithal to figure out what is going on in my own body.

“Fully armed with my mood patterns and suggested treatments, I can then go and partner with my health care professional.

“‘Female Brain Gone Insane’ has given me all the tools and information to figure out why I am feeling out of sorts. This will enable me to take control of my body and emotions. Granted, this is going to take effort on my behalf.

“Sounds like a little effort for a lot of gain.”

Book Review: Unruly Hormones, Emotional Symptoms and Physical Changes During Menopause Become Understandable In Female Brain Gone Insane

Book Review: Unruly Hormones, Emotional Symptoms and Physical Changes During Menopause Become Understandable In Female Brain Gone Insane

This book review of “Female Brain Gone Insane” was published on the LuxuryReading.com blog on January 19, 2010

Female Brain Gone Insane” is an up-to-date medical information guide brought to us by a woman who has experienced unruly hormones and has a degree in understanding them. If you’d like to take charge of your own mind and body, this is the book for you.

“There are bits of information here that I was able to convey to my mother, my girlfriend, my grandmother, and my co-workers; all seemed appreciative of the advice I had to give, and all thought I had acquired some newfound pool of wisdom when it came to females and their troubles. If only they knew that it was all from this little book!

“One interesting section was dedicated to charting the emotions and feelings along with the physical symptoms of a monthly cycle. Such a chart is meant to provide a concrete view of the pattern of hormonal changes, as well as the corresponding emotional and physical changes. Sometimes, being able to “see” something rather than continue to think of it in the abstract brings a greater understanding of what is happening.”

Desperate and having thought about suicide

IMG_0039Dearest Mia,
First off, Happy New Year to you, your loved ones and staff. I wanted to write to you today to let you know that a few days before my period, I am singing and smiling and sleeping. My health started declining in my mid 30s and I developed asthma and many, many allergies and sensitivities. Each year that passed, I grew sicker and a host of debilitating symptoms starting coming out of nowhere: Hypoglycemia, intense food cravings, PMDD, depression, debilitating anxiety, panic attacks, racing disturbing thoughts, sensitivity to all kinds of noises, body aches, allergies to all fragrances, weight gain, adult acne, hair on my breasts and chin, all consuming sex drive or no drive at all, rage, irritability, mood swings, hot flashes, energy crashes, etc, etc, etc. At 39, I was convinced I was going INSANE! So I started seeing a psychologist, she was the first one to hint that all of these symptoms might be linked to my periods (it took her two years to convince me I was not crazy, or bipolar or OCD or manic-depressive). From then on I went to a gynecologist who prescribed Paxil and that helped for a while. At 40 I had my tube tied and in retrospect I don’t think that helped my case at all. I kept going from gynecologists, to chiropractors, to immunologists, endocrinologists and one after the other just kept prescribing band aids for the symptoms without getting to the root of the problem. Desperate and having thought about suicide even, I kept searching and reading and then one day I ran into the Magnolia Diaries Volume II, and for the first time I read of this woman and other women blogging on her site describing very similar experiences to mine. It was one of the first glimpses of hope I found and another way of validating what my psychologist had said before, that I was not crazy. Looking back, premenopause arrived and found me completely uneducated and ignorant about the involuntary journey I had embarked on. My lack of coping skills, lack of support, single motherhood and dead end job didn’t help either and I am sure my adrenals got fried too. Until one fateful day when Magnolia posted a review of your book “Female Brain Gone Insane.” The next day I bought your book and it has changed my life! After reading the last page I decided to contact you, to thank you for writing something so poignant, so needed and using the language of a friend. The book really felt like you were talking to me exclusively, I saw myself on 90% of those pages. Long story short, you agreed to consult with me over the phone and from our first consultation and the plan you developed for me, less than a month later I feel NORMAL! Grounded, walking with energy, sleeping restfully, my sense of humor is back, and I am not barking at the moon anymore. Whether this sense of having me back again will sustain or not remains to be seen, but your reassurance, your kindness and the hope that you bring to me, that is priceless. Mia, I feel the world needs to know about you, I never expected to feel hope again and single handedly you have handed my life back to me (Thank God). My children have a much less grumpy mother,my coworkers can tolerate me at work and I feel better in my skin. I hope to continue working with you in my recovery and I hope and pray to God that I still know you when I enter Menopause. God sent you to save me from the grip of a debilitating life altering, HUGE hormonal imbalance and I know this is a process and I thank God everyday he put you in my path. All I can offer right now is thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I could never repay you for what you have done for me, after ONE! Consultation with you I feel that I and my children will make it through this.

Sincerely and forever thankfully yours
Your biggest fan
Elliot

easy to understand. Mia also emphasizes the role that stress plays in one’s
life and how it may be profoundly aggravating your symptoms. The importance

Book Review: Neurotransmitters and Brain Chemistry Balance May Be Two Steps to Sanity for Menopausal Women

This book review of “Female Brain Gone Insane” was written by Jenny Rough and published on her Lime.com blog on December 10, 2009

“If your female brain feels like it’s going insane (intense anxiety, frequent crying spells, irritability, etc.), the author [Mia Lundin] suggests taking a close look at your hormone levels and neurotransmitters (chemicals that relay messages between a neuron and another cell).

“Her book ["Female Brain Gone Insane"] walks readers through “steps to sanity” and takes an in-depth look at how bioidentical hormones, nutritional foods, and supplements might help. The final chapters are devoted to adrenal health and thyroid function.

“I hope my transition to menopause goes so darn smoothly I don’t need a single med, natural or synthetic. But I’m tucking the book on my shelf for future reference. Just in case.”

Book Review: Female Brain Gone Insane Is Humanized, Easy-to-Understand Help for Women With Menopausal and Hormone Imbalances

This book review was written by Magnolia Miller and published in her Magnolia Diaries, Volume II blog on November 18, 2009.

‘Female Brain Gone Insane: An Emergency Guide For Women Who Feel Like They Are Falling Apart’ offers up-to-date medical information, is presented by a woman who has experienced hormones gone wild, and is coupled with her own medical training and experience.

Mia [Lundin] brings her medical experience and authority to the table… she is able to explain in pretty simple and easy to understand terms what can be a very complicated and confusing time for so many women.

“Mia’s focus is to determine the actual chemical cause of our symptoms, rather than just treat them. As we all know, off-the-rack works okay if you fit the target demographic, but if you have specific needs, specifically tailored works best.

“She certainly doesn’t buy into the one-size-fits-all mentality and in her approach treats each person individually. The personal case studies that she presents certainly humanizes the information as we can see how others have felt and how Mia approached helping them.

“I would definitely suggest you pick up a copy of the book today and take charge of your own hormonal health.”

Low Serotonin, Depressive, Neurotic, Estrogen Dominant, Perimenopausal Woman Finds Hope and Answers

“After years of going through… well I don’t have to tell you – you can find me in your book on pages 75,76,77 and 78. I am the typical low serotonin, depressive, neurotic, estrogen dominant perimenopausal woman.

“It only took me three years to find out the above. Your book “Female Brain Gone Insane, is with me always and I thank you, thank you, thank you for putting this thing on paper.

“What happens to a woman like me whose HMO so far has yielded doctors that prescribe antidepressants and sleeping pill (thank God for those, but I know better now)? Is it our destiny to become crippled by the declining of our hormones or to be killed by the synthetic ones? In my despair, am I being overly dramatic or is there an answer for the economically challenged? Please advise…

“Your book is PHENOMENAL and any advice you give me I’ll use.

“Desperately seeking balance,

Female Anxiety, Stress, and Emotional Instability Are Paralyzing Until Chemical and Hormone Balance Are Restored

Chemical and hormone imbalances can alter fundamental personality and emotional traits to the point that highly successful and competent women find themselves unable to function in their daily lives. This is a story of a professional woman who was overcome with anxiety, stress, and emotional instability to the point where she couldn’t even recognize herself any more.

Due to a hormone and neurotransmitter imbalance and an undetected bacterial infection, I went from being an articulate, polished, six figure income professional to completely unable to function professionally or personally.

I was experiencing acute and chronic anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, memory loss, heart palpitations, incessant crying, emotional instability, and impaired speech and hearing to such a degree of severity that I was unable to perform simple daily tasks, make decisions or take care of myself. It was without a doubt the most terrifying experience I have ever had in my life as I was completely unable to control these debilitating conditions that were robbing me of my life and ME.

Prior to this time, for my entire life, I had been an independent, self sufficient and very much in control professional woman. I could not understand or get a handle on what was happening to me, and the trauma, suffering and out of control conditions that were occurring in my body and mind were rendering me completely helpless and hopeless. In addition to the physically debilitating conditions I was experiencing, I became so despondent because I thought that I had become severely mentally ill and would never be able to return to normal life again.

The afternoon I sat in Mia’s office, my symptoms were so severe; I literally thought I was dying. Mia immediately recognized my level of distress and calmly took control, assessed my condition, and then with authority yet compassion assured me that I was not dying or mentally ill and that I would feel better the next day by following her prescribed protocol. She recognized that I was unable to think clearly or make any decisions, and lovingly just took complete care of me, which is exactly what I needed that terrifying afternoon.

I sat and cried uncontrollably at the thought of finally being rid of this torment that had wrecked my life. She formulated a plan for my recovery that literally gave me my life back.

Mia’s unique and rare combination of personal experience, wisdom, knowledge, research and years of working closely and compassionately with her patients enables her to provide life changing care and advice to her patients that, in my opinion, most other doctors and health care practioners are unable or unwilling to offer. She sees and gets the whole picture, and all of the complexities of how hormones, neurotransmitters, nutrition and gut health all integrate to create health or illness.

Mia’s open attitude and combination of both standard medical treatment, when necessary, and alternative forms of healing enable her to offer her patients total wellness and healing, as opposed to piece meal bits of information and treatment from several different “specialists” who only work in their narrow and specific area of expertise.

Of all the numerous other health care practitioners I have been to over the last 20 years (and been blown off by or misdiagnosed), Mia truly is the only person I have seen who is in touch with all of the numerous and complex issues that profoundly affect the quality of life. Besides her incredible breadth of professional knowledge and experience, Mia’s authentic compassion, unconditional commitment to her patients and very personal understanding of what women go through is what truly sets her above everyone else.

I owe my physical and mental health and recovery from unspeakable suffering to Mia. My gratitude to Mia extends beyond what can be expressed in words.

The book, “Female Brain Gone Insane” was written to alert women to the root cause of the debilitating anxiety, stress, and emotional instability that is severely affecting the quality of their lives. There is hope and you are not alone!

Happy to Find a Xanax, Zoloft and Wellbutrin Alternative – Restoring Hormonal Balance Instead of Antidepressants

This is a letter from a woman who had been prescribed several different antidepressants for postpartum depression and anxiety. She now realizes that hormone and chemical imbalances are probably the root cause of her problems.

Hi Mia,

I have just purchased your book ["Female Brain Gone Insane"], and although I am only through the first 40 pages, I already have a renewed sense of confidence that I “am not going crazy!”

My “anxiety” began shortly after my son was born in 2006. I would struggle with day to day decisions such as “what are we going to do today” or “what is Jackson (my son) going to wear today?” It would overwhelm me to the point where I would get dizzy, my heart would race, and I would feel this incredible sense of doom upon me.

My Dr. quickly prescribed me Xanax for PPD [postpartum depression] and I took it for 1 month and started to feel better. I weaned myself off and felt “almost normal” for 2 years.

About 1 year ago, my husband and I started trying for our 2nd child. After about 8 months of no luck, I started tracking my ovulation and realized that I was not ovulating. Quickly, my Dr. started me on clomid with no real explanation of why I may not be ovulating on my own. After two failed clomid attempts, we decided to take a break.

During this time, my anxiety heightened, especially leading up to my period. One day, about a month ago, my legs became tingly, my mind went foggy, and I had my worst panic attack to date.

Back to the Dr. I went, only to be prescribed Zoloft and Xanax again. This only made things worse, as I experienced depression, confusion, and complete nausea from the medicine.

Currently, I am on Welbutrin and although I do not have the side effects, I still feel very anxious. I would like to focus on the “chemical and hormonal balance” that I know I have and also believe this would help with my fertility problems as well.

I will read the rest of your book word for word and hope that it can lead me to the answers I need. At the very least, I feel comforted knowing that there are so many other women out there that are going through the same thing I am!!

Best Regards,
HB
